Anthony Lister

Street artist

Anthony Lister is an Australian artist born in 1979. He travels the world but lives mainly in Sydney, a city that remains his favorite playground.

He began to paint on the macadam at the age of 17, being affected by the "graffiti virus" as he says. In 2001 Anthony Lister graduated from Queensland School of Art in Brisbane. After his training, he met Max Gimblett, considered one of the most influential calligraphers in New Zealand, whom he will follow to New York and deploy all his talents there. It is in an urban setting that his first drawings will come to life. Designated as a de facto street-artist, Anthony Lister also practices illustration and sets up installations.

His pictorial style develops in the streets of the city, but remains sophisticated with in particular a play on shadows and blurred contours, therefore bringing him closer to the status of painter. He claims to belong to the Lowbrow artistic movement, consisting in making the codes of popular culture into objects of reappropriation. Advertising, television, comics or cartoons are thus invoked and redefined in his works. Coarse superheroes are then drawn in features that may seem rough, but Anthony Lister's work leaves nothing to chance. He mocks the heroes of modern times, whom we are used to seeing on our TV screens, and draws on all the grotesque springs of Western culture to portray them.

Combining street art, pop art and expressionism, the artist's drawings convey an encrypted message with which the viewer has complete freedom of interpretation. It encourages debate and gives the feeling of generating controlled chaos. Antony Lister was named one of Australia's most collected artists by the Australian Art Collector in 2010. Vogue magazine in Australia also devoted a series of fashion photos to him featuring models in front of his works.

You can see his drawings on the walls of Milan, Los Angeles, Miami, New York or Sydney and exhibited in Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom.
